I believe the same thing that the alcohol base = does dry faster as well. If you have tried the Loctite and you aren’t= experiencing issues than go for it. Typically our experience with the alcohol base flux= es is just what you said harder time getting top fill, poor wetting and in = some cases difficulties with bridging of components. NC FX 16 seemed to not= have the same ailments when we tried it so it may be worth a try. </span></p> <p><span>The drop size and frequency of 70/70 or 80/80 is a little high I u= sually run 50/50 or 60/60 on a typical board, I will go to 70/70 on a thick= er board but this leads to the splattering and the running of flux when there is too much. Again we never has this issue with an alcohol ba= sed flux. I agree we can do some things to our process to help prevent the popping and splatter= and I am working on that. I just think an alcohol based flux will provide = better results with migration, safety and cleanliness. </p> <p>When we ran the Loctite No-Clean it just seemed to be more aggressive (I= don’t think it was, but I think it stayed where it was sprayed bette= r), and we never had any splatter issues. </p> <p>We do apply the no-clean fluxes with a drop jet – unfortunately us= ually at a rate of 70/70 to 80/80 at a speed of 135. </p> <p>We do run calibration on the drop jet fluxer whenever we take it apart t= o clean it, so I think the spray pattern is fine. B= y using an alcohol based flux instead of a water based the alcohol will eva= porate off quickly which will make it less likely for the flux to migrate o= utside of the desired area (especially on a glossy solder mask board where it tends to b= all up and migrate – almost like a rain-x type effect). The water bas= ed will not evaporate and can move as it goes through the conveyors or if t= he machine/PCB isn’t perfectly level and/or warp. Because the water based doesn’t evaporate (quickly anyways) it= will also cause splatter as the nozzle comes up to solder which leads to i= ncreased mess and requires additional cleaning. </p> <p>We used to run the NC277 and had much better solder results and less res= idue because it wouldn’t migrate outside of the solder nozzle as much= =2E I am concerned that you have seen issues with crystallization, but if w= e were to change the flux regularly, perhaps we could get around it. This one we have used a few times for testing and it= performed well. We got some in r= ecently and it has the oddest behavior in our machine. It crystalizes insid= e the bottle when nitrogen is applied to it. I would not recommend putting it in the machine. We have another customer that was considering i= t and we found it to be not a good fit for the machine. </span></p> <p><span>What problems are you having with the NC277? </span></p> <p><span>We have been using a new product by Kester recently, it is called = Select 10. It was specially designed to work with a selective solder machin= e. I attached a data sheet for you to look at.
